May 23rd Sermon Notes

Message Summary
Today Blaine spoke about enjoying God. He explained that being able to enjoy God is necessarily linked to what we know about him. You could say we enjoy God by knowing God. He expressed there are different levels of knowing. They range from the most impersonal to personal relationship: (1) sensing; (2) awareness; (3) acquaintance; (4) friendship; (5) companionship; (6) intimacy; and (7) enjoying. In the end, the more we come to know about God the more we love and enjoy him.

1. Taste and See (Ps 34:8) Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

1. How can we “taste and see that the Lord is good?”
2. Take a moment and read the entire Psalm. What is required of us (in general) if we are to truly taste and see that the Lord is good? The heart of the issue is trust in the Lord. It is trusting God to be faithful toward us and himself. In order for us to live according to his word we must trust that God knows what is best for us.

2. Please God (Heb 11:5 [cf. Gen 5:18–24]) By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.

1. What was the means or instrument by which Enoch was taken up so he did not die physically? By faith
2. What was the testimony of Enoch? He pleased God
3. What or who was Enoch’s faith in? What was the promise he did not receive? See Heb 11:39–12:2
4. Who determines what pleases God? Where do find such things?

3. Know God = Know His Word (2 Tim 1:8–14) …But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus (vv. 12–13).

1. How does Paul know whom he has believed? See vv. 8–11 and Acts 9
2. What does Paul commend Timothy to do in v. 13? How is this related to knowing God?

Application
“Spend time every single day seeking God” –Blaine.
1. Listen–Take time this week spending time in God’s word, in order to know him, love him, and enjoy him more. Start with some of the Psalms: 19, 33, 40, 86, 96, 145.
2. Pray–Set aside time to talk to God, share him your heart, your innermost desires and hurts.
3. Marinate–Take a verse or two from a Psalm and think about what is said over and over and over again. Allow the word of God to change you. Allow the truths of Scripture to make you more holy each day (cf. John 17:17).
4. Memorize–Set aside a verse a day to commit to memory. Hide the word in your heart so that it is always with you no matter where you go.

Further Study
For more on knowing God and enjoying him you could read:
1. Ephesians 1:15–21. This passage declares, among other things, that for eternity (v. 21b) God’s people will know and grow in the knowledge of “the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might” (vv. 18–19). We will learn about God to enjoy him forever.
2. J. I. Packer, Knowing God. Modern classic on theology, which simply means the study of God. Based on Scripture. Intended for the average Christian to read.
